Zakary Ryan Plautz

Aug 16, 1993 — Apr 30, 2026

Zakary “Zak” Ryan Plautz, age 32, of Merrill, WI, passed away at his home on April 30, 2026.

Zak was born on August 16, 1993 in Sheboygan, WI to Wendy Plautz and Ryan Posewitz. Throughout his school years, Zak excelled in academics and the arts. From his theatrical performances in costume at home as a child to wowing audiences in his middle school performances as the Lion in The Wizard of Oz and Aladdin in Aladdin and the King of Thieves, he loved the stage.

In high school, Zak showcased his persuasive skills as a member of the debate team, always eager to argue his case. Although a Hodgkin’s Lymphoma diagnosis his junior year threatened to disrupt his plans, it was no match for his grit and determination. On July 8, 2010, he rang the cancer-free bell at Children’s Hospital.

After a once-in-a-lifetime Make-a-Wish trip to Africa with his parents, Zak continued to thrive in school, graduating from Sheboygan South High School in 2011 as a valedictorian and Senior Class President.

Zak’s kindness, compassion and empathy were the cornerstones of who he was. He made an important difference in many lives through organizations such as the Nourish Program, Church School Work, and Rotary Interact, just to name a few. His giving heart was on display through his passion for helping others; his true colors shined through when he took the lead in organizing a bone marrow registry drive for one of his high school teachers who was diagnosed with cancer. Zak was a true advocate for the underdog and made many special friends over the years who shared his passion for making the world a better place for everyone.

A life-long learner at heart, Zak continued his educational journey out east, graduating from Columbia University in New York City in 2016. From there he delved into post baccalaureate work at Fordham University in New York and was especially proud of the Alzheimer’s research he worked on in New York where he, along with numerous colleagues, received recognition in a publication for their contributions. He was also honored to be accepted into the MD/PhD Program at Medical College of Wisconsin.

When he wasn’t immersed in lab work, Zak spent time working for a nonprofit in New York where he helped schedule arts and sciences interdisciplinary roundtables. As busy as he was with so many important endeavors, Zak always made time for friends. He loved venturing around New York City sampling delicious cuisine and experiencing the array of various cultures. The mention of “Astoria Fish Market, and Broadway” brought an instant twinkle to his bright blue eyes.

Zak worked for several companies in recent years, making many friends along the way. He had a passion for creating his own jewelry and artworks, even considering a side business selling some of his creations. Whether with family or friends, he always spread positivity and love. He believed that love is unconditional, kind, and everlasting, and his gentle, caring heart will be greatly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Zakary is survived by his mother, Wendy Plautz of Merrill; his father Ryan (Wendy) Posewitz and half-brothers of Nashville, TN; grandmothers, Carol Plautz of Merrill and Gladys Posewitz of Sheboygan, WI; aunts, Sue (Dave) Pyan of Merrill, Laura Borzykowski of Sheboygan, WI, Lisa (Phil) Entringer of Rio, WI, Lesslie (Mike) Bartzen of Sheboygan, WI; uncles, David “Beaver” (Heather) Plautz, of Merrill, Tim (Jenn) Posewitz of Nashville, TN, and Shawn (Michelle) Posewitz of Florida; numerous cousins, countless friends, and his loving furry companion, Atom.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Jerry Plautz, Don Posewitz and Gail Posewitz; and uncle, Bob Borzykowski.

Zak will be remembered for his unique way with words, his friendship, his compassion, and his genuine smile that will forever remain in the hearts of those he loved. He believed in the importance of listening and trying to understand each other better, reaching out to others who have been silent for a while, lending a hand to those in need and most of all laughing and loving a lot.

In memory of Zak, please consider a contribution to the Blood Cancer United, Mental Health America, Make-a-Wish or your local Humane Society.
