Sister Mary Angela Sackmann, a Sister of Mercy of the Holy Cross, 101, July 2, 2026 at Bell Tower Residence in Merrill, Wisconsin.
Jeannette Sackmann was born May 15, 1925, in Medford, WI, to John and Elizabeth(Massoth) Sackmann. She entered Holy Cross Convent in Merrill, Wisconsin, September 14, 1946, and professed her vows on July 17, 1948. Sister was in her 78th year of ministry at the time of her death.
She graduated from Medford High School. Before entering the convent, she attended the Taylor County Normal School for 2 years and taught in a one room school. She received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Edgecliff College in Cincinnati OH. She taught school at St. John School, Deer Park OH, St. Mary’s School, Antigo WI, St. Joseph’s School, Rhinelander WI and St. Robert’s School, Merrill WI. Sister Mary Angela worked in the Diocese of Superior CCD office. She was the Director of Religious Education in Luling, Hahnville, Vacherie, and Baton Rouge LA.
In 1984 she received her CPE Certificate from St. Louis University. She then worked as Chaplain of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge LA.
During her first retirement in 1998, she volunteered at food pantries, nursing homes, St. Anthony’s Retreat Center in Marathon, WI and as Spiritual Assistant to the Secular Franciscan St. James Fraternity in Wausau WI.
In 2008, Sister Mary Angela along with Sister Joelle accepted a call from the USA Province to work with the poor in Kentucky. They worked there until 2015 when she retired again and moved back to Merrill. In 2010, she received an award from the Franciscan Federation for “Passionately Embracing Gospel Living.”
Sister has also served the Holy Cross Sisters as the Coordinator of the Senior Sisters. Sister Mary Angela loved to travel and bake and to spend time at the lake with her family.
Preceding her in death are her parents John and Elizabeth, her brothers, William(Eva), Joseph(Edna), Valentine(Lucille), Robert(Lillian), Kenneth, Clarence(Elizabeth), Herbert and sisters, Annabelle(Glenn) Moorhead, Caroline(Robert) Viel, Dorothy, Nora(Paul) Hornak, and Leona(Harold) Hornak.
She is survived by her family of Holy Cross Sisters and associates, as well as her sister-in-law Jane Sackman and many nieces, nephews, as well as great and great-great nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Mass for Sister will be held on July 10th at 11:00am in Holy Cross Chapel in Bell Tower Residence. Father Charles Hoffmann will officiate. Visitation will be held July 10th at 9:30am until time of the liturgy. Burial will follow in the St Francis Catholic Cemetery, Merrill, WI.
