Melvin 'Mel' Hassel

Melvin ‘Mel’ E. Hassel, 83, formerly of Merrill, passed away Sunday, September 20, 2026, at Mount View Care Center, Wausau. Born on December 6, 1942, in the Town of Harding, Lincoln County, Mel was the son of Peter and Elsie (Kleinschmidt) Hassel. He married Janice Marie Jacobson in 1963. She preceded him in death on December 2, 2001.

Mel spent many years working at the former Hurd Millwork in Merrill. He enjoyed golfing, collecting baseball cards, watching his grandchildren’s Little League games. He also loved gardening and tending to his grape vines and apple trees. Mel was very passionate about sharing God’s word. He dedicated his time to ministry at Lincoln Hills School, the Lincoln County Jail, and prisons.

Survivors include his children, Mark (Bridgette) Hassel of Merrill, Kelly Hassel of Merrill, and Robyn Oleson of Arizona; eight grandchildren, Jacob Hassel, Alyssa Hassel, Danny Green, Samantha Bacher, Sierra Bacher, McKenzie Heimerl, Noah Oleson, and Kaidyn Hassel-Connor; four great grandchildren, Liam Heimerl, Creed Heimerl Cole, Lincoln Hanson, and Levi Hanson; sister, Marjorie Williams of Tomahawk; brother, David (Patricia) Hassel of Milwaukee; and sisters-in-law, Janet Hassel of Medford and Pat Hassel of Milwaukee.

Mel was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Hassel; parents, Peter and Elsie Hassel; grandson, Cody Green; sisters, Wilma (Jack) Mulkins, Elthera (Harold) Groth, and Viola (Hilbert) Tesch; brothers, LaMar Hassel, Peter E. Hassel, Whyman L. (Betty) Hassel, Lavern Hassel, Jack Hassel, and Newood Hassel; and brother-in-law, Rolland Williams.

The memorial service will take place at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, October 8, 2026, at Taylor-Stine-Waid Funeral & Cremation – 301 Eagle Dr., Merrill. Pastor Sue Smaaland will officiate. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 A.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
