LaVerne Helen Mussell, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 27, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on April 19, 1930, in Hartford, WI, she was the daughter of Harry and Leona Licht.
LaVerne lived a full and vibrant life, marrying her soulmate, Robert Mussell, on July 10, 1948. Robert passed away on September 25, 2010, but their love and memories lived on in the hearts of their family.
LaVerne spent many years co-owning the family business, Tomahawk Tire Center. LaVerne found joy in playing the piano, organ, and guitar. She was also an avid puzzler who enjoyed putting together jigsaw puzzles.
Her love for nature was evident in her fondness for cardinals and hummingbirds, while her enthusiasm for the Green Bay Packers was unmatched. LaVerne was known as the local flag lady on Thielman Street, further showcasing her dedication to her community. A devoted Catholic, she was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Merrill.
LaVerne is survived by her children, Gary (Debra Shipway) Mussell, Barbara (Dennis) Hopfensperger, and Steve (Jenny) Mussell-grandchildren, James Hopfensperger, Kristine (Matthew) O'Brien, Ashley (Brian) Andrew, Cody Mussell, and Ryan Mussell. great-grandchildren, Thea Kay Andrew, Skylar Rose Andrew, Cora Lynn O'Brien, and Amy Rose O'Brien. LaVerne is also survived by brother-in-law Paul Mussell and her many nieces and nephews, who all held a special place in her heart.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Henry (Esther) Licht and Robert "Bobby" (Diane) Licht, as well as her sisters-in-law, Phyllis Mussell and Augusta (Robert) Leu, and her brother-in-law Alfred (Marion) Mussell.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in LaVerne's name to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter.

A Visitation will be at Taylor-Stine-Waid Funeral & Cremation, 301 Eagle Dr., Merrill, Wisconsin from 4pm-7pm on Thursday, June 18, 2026. Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Bloomville, on Friday, June 19 at 11am.
