LaVern ‘Curley’ Meurett, 88, of Merrill, passed away Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Aspirus Merrill Hospital.
LaVern was born April 22, 1937, in Mosinee, son of Mark and Ellen (Jenks) Meurett. After high school, Curley enlisted in the United States Army. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on April 23, 1957. Curley was proud of his service to our country and was able to participate in the Never Forgotten Honor Flight on April 24, 2017.
Curley married Mavis Brandenburg on October 3, 1959. She preceded him in death on June 22, 2002. Curley worked as an interior and exterior painter and decorator. At the beginning of his career, he and his brother designed and painted billboards by hand. Curley was very creative and enjoyed making stained glass and mosaics. Curley enjoyed the outdoors be it golfing, fishing, gardening, berry picking, or making maple syrup. In his younger years, he was a well-known fastpitch softball pitcher. Curley also enjoyed working indoors making sauerkraut, canning, baking cakes and cookies, making candy, and making Tom & Jerry and Hot Buttered Rum mixes. Curley was an animal lover.
Survivors include his children, Laurie (Pete Rynes) Meurett of Minneapolis and Dan (Lori) Meurett of Stevens Point; grandchildren, Molly, Lilabel, Sarah, Jason, Satchel, Jake, and Nathan; great granddaughter, Josie; and sisters, Susan Mueller of Minocqua and Sally Siegler of Wadena, MN.
Curley was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis Meurett; parents, Mark and Ellen Meurett; son, Dean (Connie) Meurett; brothers, Burleigh ‘Burl’ (Catherine ‘Kate) Meurette, James (June) Meurett, and William ‘Willy’ (Mary) Meurett; brothers-in-law, Wayne Mueller and Leonard ‘Len’ Siegler; nephews, Matthew Meurett, Michael Meurett, and Chandler Schaffhausen; and significant other, Barbara Bakke.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
