James Allen Pagel

James Allen Pagel, age 88, passed away at the Tomah Veteran’s Hospital on September 19, 2026.

James was born March 29, 1938, to Harry and Myrtle (Borchardt) Pagel. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran religion. He was an active member of the Christ Lutheran Church in Merrill.

James was a Dairy Farmer most of his life. He started farming at the age of 16, while his dad worked construction. He joined the Army National Guard in 1960 and received six months active-duty training. A year later, the National Guard was called to active duty for one year to Fort Lewis, Washington during the Berlin Crisis. After which he returned home, back to farming.

James enjoyed working with his dairy cows and raising field crops. At the age of 79, it became difficult and he sold his farm, cattle, and equipment. He purchased a house in Merrill and retired.

James is survived by his cousins, Carol Holz, Jerry Grawien, Leann Furhmann, Robert Grawien, Jane Pehlke, and Marlene Thomaschefsky, with whom he is close with and his best friend, his beloved dog, Randy.

A private graveside service and burial will be held at Merrill Memorial Park Cemetery. The Merrill VFW will conduct Military Honors for James.

In Lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in James’ name to the Lincoln County Humane Society.
